TGIF

I just got back from watching the Top Chef demo outside the Pru! My lord, was it hot outside. Nikki was so cute! Photos to come later...

In the meantime, some links to enjoy...

The United States of Sriracha Lists places all across the U.S. you can enjoy the amazing condiment sriracha (an Asian hot sauce with a cult-like following). For Massachusetts, Myers + Chang's banh mi makes the list. {New York Times}

Massachusetts set to unveil fast-food menu rules, which would require chain restaurants to list calories. {Reuters}

First Bite: Boston Burger Company. Is it just me, or are burgers EVERYWHERE these days? Is it because summer's coming? Or is it because it's the only thing people can afford? Either way, it's making me hungry. {Boston magazine's blog "Chowder"}

StillTasty.com answers those "Can I still eat this?" questions that I always have. Apparently I've already risked it by eating pizza that was left out overnight. But what college student hasn't eaten pizza that was left out overnight though!? I mean, let's be serious.

It may be cheap, but it's still tasty Ideas for buying cheaper cuts of meat and maximizing them. This food trend is everywhere right now. I avoid the whole thing by only buying tofu. {via The New York Times}

Great books for foodies. I always tend to pick books that have to do with food. Shocking, I know.

This photo makes me excited for fresh produce. {via A Cup of Jo}

Michael Schlow wants to get you laid. Boston chef Michael Schlow gives his dating advice, in terms of food, of course. Kind of humorous, but his pointers are actually pretty accurate. A must-read for the men out there. {via MenuPages}

TGI...T?

I woke up this morning thinking it was Friday. I know, FML, right? Apparently so did J.Scrib, as she strolled into work this morning in jeans. Does anyone else have that feeling today? Maybe it's because it's the first sunny day in Boston this week, which makes me want to just skip to the weekend.

In any case, I thought I'd embrace this I-can't-get-motivated, are-you-sure-it's-not-Friday?, feeling by doing "TGIF" a day early this week. So here's some reading to distract you this particular Thursday.

F*** YEAH CILANTRO. There's a famous website that is devoted to people who hate cilantro. I will not dignify this website by linking to it ;) As a cilantro-aholic myself, I found this reactionary blog hilarious, all about the amazing herb that is cilantro. Here's the author's reaction to a bacon-wrapped hot dog with cilantro: IF THIS CAN HAPPEN THEN THERE IS ALSO HOPE FOR ISRAEL AND PALESTINE. Warning: some parts are randomly pretty crude; who knew cilantro could elicit this sort of response!?
Sonic is coming to Peabody. You've seen the commercials. All.The.Time. And yet there isn't one within hundreds of miles. My first thought: what terrible marketing! My second thought: I need to try this!! (Sonic is playing some great HTG with Dish Gal)... But now there's one coming to Peabody, complete with a drive-in and everything. If only we could get an In-n-Out burger here now... {via MenuPages}

Tweeting Recipes The New York Times writes about a woman from Northern Ireland on Twitter who "Tweets" entire recipes! For you non-Twitter-ers, that means a recipe in less than 140 characters.

Early reports on new restaurant Tory Row in Cambridge. The chowhound gang reports on early experiences at brand new restaurant Tory Row, which comes from the Miracle of Science/Audobon Circle/Middlesex Lounge peeps. Though no one is raving, I still really want to try this place.

What's your weirdest snack combo? A conversation about bizarre snacks people love. I am intrigued by the peanut butter and dill pickles sandwich; sounds disgusting, but I do love pickles... What's your favorite weird snack? {via Serious Eats}

Three things Dish Gal is excited about...

These can't wait until TGIF...Things I'm really psyched for:

1) Top Chef: Masters on Bravo: It's Top Chef but with already well-established chefs...and to top it off, Boston is FINALLY representing!! Michael Schlow, make us proud ;)

2) "Vegas comes to Kneeland Street": Boston.com's food blog Dishing reports that Frank De Pasquale (of Mare and Bricco) is opening a Vegas-style restaurant in the old News space, complete with cabanas, roof deck, house music, and gourmet burgers. Embarassing, but I'm super excited for this. The best part? After 2 a.m. on weekends there's a breakfast buffet for $20. Ummm hi, I'm Dish Gal, nice to meet you.

3) SMEEPS: Smores meet Peeps. Holy heaven above these look amazing. Must. Try. Now.

Hi readers! TGIF! Dish Gal is headed out for some shenanigans in the South End tonight, and then going to see Skylar's boyfriend, aka Jacques, perform in his band tomorrow night. Then Sunday I'm off to Cali!!!

Here are some things to read up on while I'm gone:

The Return of Sugar? This New York Times article points out the increased demand for regular old sugar, now that high-fructose corn syrup has gotten such a bad rap.

Cafe 47 opens in Back Bay It's heartening to hear of new restaurants during these dismal times... {via MenuPages}

Stephi's on Tremont Boston magazine's blog Chowder weighs in on Stephi's on Tremont. Looks like Dish Gal will be stopping by soon!

50 of the world's best food blogs Somehow they skipped Dish Gal? Hmm, I'll forgive them just this once ;) In the meantime, definitely check out some of these stellar sites. A great "time suck."
{via Times UK}

Chocolate beer!? That's either the greatest thing ever invented, or the grossest. {via Boston Globe's blog, Dishing}

One non-food related item: Boston- The Hack Tales from a new Boston cabbie. Horrifying and interesting. Here's an excerpt: "Things that people would never othewise do in public they'll do in the back of a cab, assuming a level of privacy that is extraordinary considering they're still on public streets and a stranger is sitting less than two feet away..."

D.G. is headed to N.Y.C. this weekend for an early birthday celebration with Jamie, Skylar, and Maeve! The actual big day is Monday (planning on going out to Masa that night) but am going to dance my bum off in New York until then. Any suggestions for moderately priced, fun dinner spots for tomorrow night?

Here are some fun links for your Friday:

Boston chefs on facebook! MenuPages does a nice round-up, and even includes some fun tidbits about each. Example: who knew Rachel Klein was an ANTM (America's Next Top Model) fan?

What's the Soup? This website rounds up the daily soup specials so you don't have to call around to lots of restaurants. Definitely needs to be expanded (only 2 places for Boston proper?) but is a really nice idea. .

Group On: Collective Buying Power Check out this site for big discounts at local companies. How it works is that you bid on the discount, and if enough people buy it, it's yours. If not enough people bid, you don't get charged.

Sudoku Pizza Yes, you read that correctly.. {via Serious Eats}

First, I know I totally missed the "hot dish of the week" this week... I actually know what it is, but I can't find my camera cord anywhere to upload my picture! Bad news.

In the meantime, don't forget to take my bday poll on the right! I desperately need your help coming up with a decision.

And of course, here are some links to get through this Friday. . .

Scanwiches -- a website that features scanned images of the insides of sandwiches from different restaurants. Example: a corned beef sandwich from the famous Katz's Deli in NYC:
20 Worst Foods in America -- 2,400 calories for an appetizer!? It gets even worse. Pros of this? You'll never feel guilty eating a "measly" 300 calorie donut again. {via Men's Health}

3 Buck Bites -- a website that does the work for you and finds "cheap eats for food lovers" in different cities.

Review of the Week: Striking Gold 2.0-- this honestly made me laugh out loud. It's a user review of a Chinese restaurant in NYC that is so, so funny. A must-read. {via MenuPages Boston}

Serious Heat: Taming the Chile Fire-- Dish Gal LOVES spicy food. The hotter, the better. This article not only explains what parts of the chile are hot, but also how to "tame the fire" when your mouth is crying out in pain. Hint: don't drink water! {via Serious Eats}

Busy day- I almost forgot about TGIF !! Here are some fun links. It's FREEZING today, so I'm looking forward to a hot and spicy bowl of pho tonight. What are your plans for the weekend, dearest readers??

Warning: this has nothing to do with food, and some are a little crass, but they are hilarious examples of times when you want to just say "F My Life". Makes your Friday seem much better in comparison! Here's an example of one:

OH. MY. LORD. Please do not eat this. EVER.

I feel we need to end with something uplifting, no?

So, here's a rundown of the health benefits of chocolate, which hopefully will help you enjoy Valentine's day guilt-free. =)

Happy almost weekend for all you 9 to 5-ers! Any big plans?? I'm headed out to dinner (location still TBD) with Sky & Maeve tonight, and then tomorrow Z and I are celebrating our 2 year anniversary with a day of gallivanting through Harvard Square. Then for the Super Bowl I'm planning on making some good-for-you cheesy cornbread muffins from http://www.hungry-girl.com/, and some veggie chili with sweet potatoes and black beans. Yum!

In the meantime, I'm thinking of making these Friday links a weekly thing. I think they are definitely needed, as everyone slooowly checks out on Friday as the day goes on. Well at least I do. And apparently, Alec too:
I told you -- the resemblance is uncanny!

Here are some recent things that intrigued me that I thought I would share. Enjoy!
