Dish Gal's guide to getting the most out of life, one meal at a time...

Hot Dish of the Week: Mushy Peas!!

Patrick Lyons' new restaurant, The Landsdowne (shockingly located on Landsdowne Street), didn't jump out at me as a "must try place" until I saw one menu item: mushy peas!!

I had these in London a bunch of times when I couldn't resist the fish & chips at the pubs. I describe them as peas mushed up with lots of salty goodness; here's the actual, Wikipedia definition. Either way, I love them, and have never come across them in the States before. I'm sure there are tons of places that serve them, but for some reason I've never seen any.

Here they are in all their glory from my 2006 trip to Brighton, England.
Here's the menu for The Landsdowne.

This post is shockingly remiss in failing to mention that the Landsdowne owes its existence to the shuttering of Jake Ivory's (I'll give Dish Gal a pass if she was waiting for the actual restaurant review to bring this up).

JI could be lame and obnoxious, but it was a unique night-out option. I don't think I ever had a bad time there. It was always my go-to spot to take friends visiting from out of town. Hopefully, The Landsdowne pulls its weight and is able to rise above establishments like the Kinsale, the Asgard, An Tua Nua, Sola's, the Corrib Pub in Brookline, MJ O'Connor's, Hennesey's, JJ Foley's, McFadden's, Kitty O'Shea's, the Corrib Pub in Brighton, Matt Murphy's, the Greenbriar, O'Leary's, and Porter Belly.

Wow I didn't realize Jake Ivory's even closed- I never got a chance to go!! I heard great things though. I generally avoid Landsdowne Street area (can be chaotic to put it nicely)...

They serve mushy peas at The Battery in Brighton (my review from the Boston Phoenix here: http://thephoenix.com/Boston/Food/72037-BATTERY/ ), an Irish-owned fish and chips shop. If you order them and don't specify otherwise, they dump them on top of your chips, which I don't recommend, as those chips lack some needed crispness to start with. Excellent fried haddock, less-good fried pollock, fine mushy peas.

Hmm, mushy peas on top of the fries!? That doesn't seem to make any sense. I'm literally grimacing as I write this. But otherwise thanks for the suggestion! I wanted to try that place out. I love a good fish & chips.
